Shape Up Saturday Series: Body Shaming

For those of you who don’t know what body shaming is, it’s
basically just shaming someone for their body type.  Yup, it’s that simple.  Body shaming comments include but are not
limited to:
“Ew, she’s too skinny she should eat a burger.”
“That girl is so fat, she needs to stop stuffing her face
and start going to the gym.”
“Real women have curves.”
“Eat a pizza and stop obsessing over your fit life.”
Body shaming comes in ALL shapes and sizes.  Whether you are skinny, curvy, heavier, or
fit.  I’ve seen body shaming for ALL OF
THESE BODY TYPES.  It’s really sad,
because how is ANYONE supposed to be happy with their bodies if society went
from saying you need to look like celebrities and be a size 0 to shaming any
body type out there.  Yes, there are a
lot of people with eating disorders out there at the desire to be thin, however
there are also the people who are naturally skinny because of their metabolisms.
There are people who decide to start going to the gym because they want to be
healthier.  Being a fit person isn’t just
for what you look like but how you feel. 
Telling someone they shouldn’t be going to the gym and that they look
disgusting and are pathetic for not eating a pizza everyday is not ok.  Being a curvy woman and saying “real women
have curves” (which I’ve actually been guilty of doing many many years ago) is
not ok. 
With how my weight and body has fluctuated since High School
I’ve been body shamed for all of the body types I mentioned above.
When I was bigger someone actually said to me “move over big
girl you’re spilling out of your seat.”
Recently when I lost all of the weight someone actually said
“go eat a burger, guys don’t like skinny girls, you need curves.”  I also had someone say “now I can call you
beautiful because you lost so much weight.”
Since I’ve taken health and fitness seriously over the past
series of months someone said “maybe you should slow down on the muscle gain
and actually eat something other than cardboard.”
Now mind you, these comments were not asked for, nor were
they welcome.  They were just blurted out
to me.  As someone who has struggled with
their body image and weight for over 10 years, it’s hard for me to hear certain
comments.  My body has changed
drastically over the past 10+ years and each time I’ve changed or even done
something to change I still get body shamed. 
If it’s said as a joke or sarcastically that’s ok because some of the
comments are really funny and I don’t take offense to things easily, but if you
say things in a malicious tone or I know you aren’t trying to make a joke, that’s
when it’s not ok. 
Another thing that one should hold their tongue on is
someone who is heavier going to the gym. 
Don’t call them fat, they are at the gym because they aren’t healthy or
they don’t feel comfortable in their own skin. 
Don’t discourage them just because they aren’t fit.  They will sculpt their body if they work hard
enough.  I walked into a gym for the
first time this week with my mom and we both felt so out of place.  It didn’t help that no one was really helpful
there, we only went on the treadmills for now until we get more
A journey to loving your body (not even just a fitness
journey) is a long and hard one that needs dedication and commitment.  Loving yourself is hard after so many years
of hating yourself.  As the woman I am
today, it’s taken me a long time (almost 30 years) to be happy with my body and
love myself.  Are there still certain
things I’d like to change?  Yes,
absolutely, I always want to be leaner and healthier, but I actually love
myself.  I have a really good
relationship with myself, so body shaming someone who feels as happy as I do is
just downright rude lol.
