Here’s Britney’s Original Version
When I was younger I was never the pretty, popular, skinny
girl. I was always a little more of an
athletic build and I wasn’t exactly the prettiest and DEFINITELY not even close
to popular lol. I was an outcast I guess
you can say. Music was my way of coping
with things, and I used to LOVE that the teeny boppers that I listened to in my
preteens to teens had a lot of dance involved in their music. That’s why when Britney Spears came out, I,
just like the rest of the girls my age went nuts! I used to know EVERY single dance move of
EVERY Britney Spears video. Every time
that MTV would have Britney on their “Making the Video” show I watched it over
and over again, until I got the choreography down pat. I danced in my room alone in the dark (most
times) so that I could just be myself and dance like no one is watching. Since this awkward stage in my life I’ll
randomly break out into a dance with no shame, but it took time for me to
really get that type of confidence.

Britney Spears was always my favorite pop star growing
up. I was excited when she dated JT and
ended up hating JT and N’Sync for a little while when they broke up because,
um, who could break up with my girl Brit?
I own every single album she’s ever made and had so many posters of her
on my wall. When she had her 2007
breakdown I didn’t have anything bad to say because I was also going through
some tough times in my life that I totally understood how easy it is to just
crack as a normal human as opposed to a celebrity where you have to watch what
you do and say all the time and have to be worried about paparazzi and if you
will be a non celebrity the next day.

One of the things on my bucket list is to see Britney
perform so that I can have my fan girl moment along with dance and sing to
every single song. With all of that
being said, Britney Spears will always be one of my favorites and I have no
shame saying that haha. For today’s post
I decided to make my own version of the Britney Spears Slave 4 U MTV
performance. If you’ve never seen this
performance you’re obviously really young, or you live under a rock haha. No, I’m just kidding but I honestly don’t
know anyone who hasn’t seen this performance haha. Moving on to the tutorial!

THE TOP
Supplies:
Bra (Target, I took the bow off)
Green Tulle (Joann’s, similar here)
TOP: STEP 1
First you will start adding the tulle to the cups of the bra. You will need to have basic hand sewing skills for this. You basically sew the tulle on one side and just continuously fold over the tulle as seen below.
TOP: STEP TWO
You will then have to sew the straps and the side portion of the bra. Just sew the tulle onto all of these parts of the bra as seen below.
TOP: STEP THREE
Now, take your old necklace, or you can buy a new necklace for a few bucks if you don’t have one. You can either crazy glue these onto the bra in the specific spots shown below, or you can sew them on. I chose to sew them on because I knew they would be sturdy that way. You will need pliers of some sort as well. You’ll want to put the three “jewels” in the middle of the cups, and then where the strap meets the cup on both the left and right hand side.
THE BOTTOMS
Supplies
Fabric Glitter Paint (Michael’s, similar here)
Gold Ribbon (Michael’s, similar here)
1 yard fabric (Joann’s, similar here)
BOTTOMS: STEP ONE
Create wings with your fabric paint. I’m not going to lie to you, I could have done a MUCH better job, but I was extremely tired and sick for the first two weeks of October and I wanted to make sure y’all saw this DIY costume. You can always use a stencil as well! Let this dry.
BOTTOMS: STEP TWO
Once you let the above dry, take your gold ribbon and hot glue it around the band of the shorts. I ended up tucking in my shorts so that’s why it looks like gold ribbon is really low.
BOTTOMS: STEP THREE
Next, take your yard of fabric (mine was stretchy and from Joann’s, but you should definitely work with chiffon instead, I just had to have this print haha) and cut it into pieces. I had 8 total pieces. The reason why is because I was sewing them together inside out, then flipping them to the right side so that the white (as pictured below) wasn’t visible when you put on the shorts. I added all four final pieces to the shorts, as pictured in the below 3 pictures.
THE ACCESSORIES
Supplies:
If you really want to get into it Headset
Now that I’ve told y’all about my obsession with Britney Spears from my younger days and currently (I think I would cry if I ever met her), let’s move on to the linkup! I've never seen that Britney Spears performance but maybe that's because I'm old, haha. I haven't watched MTV in 25-30 years. But you did a great job with that costume and you look great in it!

Love, love, love this costume idea!!! We got super lazy this year with our Halloween costumes since we are supposed to be packing up our house and ya know, pregnancy. I handmade Rory's costume but half-assed it a little. Our costumes are t-shirts that say "MerMom" and "MerDad" haha.
